SHIP AHOY
DATE: 18-04-13

The word ‘Ship Ahoy’ originated from Germany. The German sailors used this word in order to hail a ship. Ships have been used as a mode of transport for the past thousand years. They are classified into war ships, cargo ships and cruise ships. Our ship the “STAR CRUISE DPS” is a luxury ship which transports passengers who are usually on a holiday.

It was indeed a spectacular sight on the 18th morning as we entered into the doors and into the assembly foyer to witness the “STAR CRUISE DPS”. The excitement on the faces of the children while viewing the set knew no boundaries. The set compromised of a huge cut out of the ship which had the sea as the backdrop. One had the sense of being on the ship and at sea.

An artificial harbor was created wherein children stood at the shore and gazed at the floating sea animals. The very colorful starfish, sea horse, crabs, turtles and jelly fish were a treat to the eyes. Through the day sounds of the waves and the siren of the ship were played therefore creating a true harbor ambience.

There was also a light house which stood at a distance from the ship so that the children would understand its true need. Pictures of safety equipment were shown and their importance was stressed to them. Children of each class were directed to the check in counters where they were issued tickets, boarding passes and baggage tags. They were also given an explanation as to why they were given these tags and passes and how to use them.

Children then moved on to the baggage scanning counter where their bags were taken and frisked using the artificially made baggage scanner. After scanning their baggage they had to go to the security check counter where they were frisked again by the metal detector at each counter they were given an explanation as to why these things were being done. However the children had many questions to ask at each counter.

The teachers had to hold them back before they made their way into the ship to introduce them to a few new terms of the ship like the deck, the bow, the anchor, the ships wheel, the captain and the crew. This was in fact a great way to learn by seeing and experiencing.

Finally the much awaited moment had arrived for the children to go on board. There were totally excited. They peeped and waved their hands gleefully through the windows thus completing their cruise on the “STAR CRUISE DPS”.

Indoor and outdoor activities were conducted with regard to the major “SHIP AHOY” activity. Each class was given a coloring sheet based on a variety of ships apart from this there were various other ship making activities which were easy and interesting for the children to make.

There was a big cutout of a pirate in the assembly foyer for which the children had to attach the eye patch correctly. Each child was blindfolded and was given a chance to attach the eye patch. This activity was very amusing for the little ones. They totally enjoyed doing this activity.

This was a day filled with excitement enjoyment and amusement for the children. The impression of this day would be strongly imbibed in their memories for them to ponder on and cherish forever thus making “SHIP AHOY” everlasting.
